Golden age

The golden age for sending postcards was from the end of the 19th century until the 1920's. There was no other way of long distance communication other than the postal service for most people, and also editors tended to use very local scenes with much animation and detail. Later on they found that showing details of a scene including people and vehicles tended to date very quickly as fashons changed. Editors then tended to prefer more general views which meant that the cards would have a longer shelf life. Anybody like to collect old cards of their town?

I wondered if you knew the first overland mail service in Australia was effected between Sydney and Melbourne in 1838 ? Embossed postage covers were introduced in Sydney for 1s 3d per dozen. This was the first time in the World that a system of prepayment of postage by means of a stamped letter became available!
