TAP's Diff Mod
The least work to do it any other way is to use the Disc set up swinging arms,
bearing carrier and the LSD drive shafts, this is because the bearing carrier
is a larger dia and I found that they allowed more clearance for the bigger
outer CV joint on the disc swinging arm, bolt the drive shaft up to the drum
swinging arm and it will jam on the arm its self.
Un aware of this at the time and with both cars on the ramps in bits and unable
to get the beams off because of the way they were on the ramps I got round this
by turning the CV down where needed as well as mods to get the bigger bearing
carrier to fit so if you bare that in mind this is what I had to do to the drum
swinging arms, donor parts all from a XR4x4.
The 4x4 bearing carrier where it fits into the arm is a larger dia then the
drum bearing carrier, not by a lot but you have to file the shoe back plate and
arm locating hole for the carrier to fit
Next thing to do is mod the bearing carrier, which means cutting the caliper
mounts off
Before
After
Then you can bolt the back plate and bearing carrier back on
With all 4 bolts in there is a snag in the fact that the handbrake shoe lever
fowls the bottom bolt long before full travel
This is because the disc B/carrier flange is thicker then the drum type flange,
this was over come by modding the bolt head thickness
Once done the lever will clear ok
Use the disc drive flange with the drum and away you go
I have no pic's of the drive shaft CV mods, I was using ABS CV's ,with these
you have to turn off the ABS steps and turn down the first large lip just
before where the Boot is located.
