Ok, so you may have a really fast or a really slow internet connection, but what speed do you actually get?
Well, you can test your connection with SpeedTest.net website!

Go to the website here :

Just click on a location (one of the little pyramids things) and the download and upload tests will start ...
When the tests have finished, just copy the "Forum link" code it gives you and paste it into a reply here!

Here is what I got this afternoon :

It could be better, it could be worse ... so, how about you ? :D

Lol, speedtest.net is so biased. You're better off downloading a huge file with multiple connections from a reliable source such as microsoft to determine your top speed.

I don't see how SpeedTest.net is biased ?!

I'll just take it that you got a shit score, so all you can think of is saying that there's something wrong with the test ... ;)

But anyway, just to made you happy, here is the best test you can do, downloading the latest ATI drivers! :D

The one I downloaded was "Option 2", the full driver package for Vista 64 bit (128 Mb), from here :

Single connection from the ATI website :

And the same file, but using 4 connections from Silly Project server :

I couldn't do it from the ATI website with GetRight, because it's HTTPS, and the free version of GetRight doesn't support that.

Still, not too bad, and that's at one of the wort times in the evening too ... :)

Speedtest is biased in the following ways:

1. Random people host the speed test, they just have to ask. There is no guarantee on bandwidth etc and from my experience most of them are crap. My 10Mbps server can't even max out on any I've ever tried, UK, France, USA, Australia. None of them could max it out yet downloading from say M$ or even the SillyProject server with a few threads could.

2. It is single threaded, meaning you get the speed of 1 thread only whereas with the other way I mentioned you can uses as many as you like.

I use speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and that always gives me an accurate result but I still don't rely on it. I always back it up with a proper test of downloading a big file.

Indeed, there is no guarantee of bandwidth on any server, or anywhere inbetween you and the server too. ;)

Andy wrote:My 10Mbps server can't even max out

That can depend on loads of things, and maybe you just didn't choose a good server.
And maybe you server was "serving" at the time as well, which would eat some of the bandwidth ...

Andy wrote:I use speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and that always gives me an accurate result

Well their server is shit, look at the scores I got compared with SpeedTest.net :

Moral of the story, it depends on where you are, where you're getting it from, and what's between you and it ... ;)

I got " 3201.127 kbit/s (400.14 KByte/s) " with that ...
