Work.

Postby Justin » Wed 15 Aug 2007 00:54

I have a problem, Its name is Work.
Since Speed I think it is, is only 15. I can state my age hopefully not get flamed.
I am 14, and my job is horrible. I work 7 days a week, which sounds bad, but its no hours, only enough to mess up my day. Also, at 14, I don't see the need a lot of need to get a job, and one that treats me like shit. Like I am their slave is how I am often referred as.
I planned on keeping the job however, for the winter to pay for my mobile, and have a bit of spending money. I don't want to quit because I have dreamed of getting my own car as soon as possible. But, the other side is that I am still young, and I could enjoy next summer (Seeing as I worked this one away).
My main concern is, not being able to get a car. The summer after next, I wanted to get a job again, however... I fear that I won't be able to get one.
Comments?

Worst thing is, most of you are from Europe, so like, its not the same when trying to get a min. wage job.. I don't think.

I'm suprised you'd get any job at 14 ... why are you not in school any more?

And about the car, don't forget it's not only the cost of buying the car.
Insurance, petrol and repairs/maintenance all cost money too ...

Speed, you working 7 days a week?

Dan: Yes, I understand that. I'll already have $1500+ saved in the bank to get a car, plus I should have a job for about 3-4 months to get some money saved up and buy then.

I really have plans to quit next summer, I just hope I am able to find another job when I am 16.
Since none of you (as far as I know) are from Canada, or the U.S. you can't really help with my questions.
Ah well...

I had a job when I was 14. I agree, it was horrible.

Wed, Thurs, Fri, I'd go to a dog grooming shop at 5:00. Sweep/vaccum/clean up the dog shit for an hour and a half and then leave.

$40 every 2 weeks

I saved 1/2 of every paycheck, and spent half. I had $2,000 and the day I turned 15, I got a better job. Then at 16, again, a better job, and had my license. I went from making 5 / hr(below minimum wage, but since I was 14 I didn't have a minimum wage, just a maximum amount of hours...shitty, I know) to now $9 / hr, and I'm 17.

Key to making more money is move up. Don't get in the system where you get your yearly or semi yearly raise. I'd find a job every year making atleast a dollar more, so I'd basically double my raise. I was just offered a corporate job, not sure what the pay will be for that though...

My advice to you is time management, and asset management. I'm only 17 and I don't have the best car in the world, but I like it. You're not going to be able to get a lambo, or something crazy, so you've got to find what the best is for the cheapest amount of money. And then you've got to figure out how much you're willing to work. 2 summers ago, I didn't work at all. Last summer, I worked 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. This summer, I'm only working about 25 hours a week. I get a little extra coin in my pocket(pending my car doesn't fuck up like it has recently), and I've still got plenty of time.

Being 14 blows. But you're obviously headed in the right direction and you're much more mature than your peers. All I suggest is balance everything. Don't work all the time, but atleast work some.

Edit: I know I just wrote a novel, sorry...but it was the only way to get my point across :]
